June 18, Day 32, Palmer 60's

Another adventurous day! This morning we visited a reindeer farm, of course I viewed them from the truck, but Lana and Chuck took the tour.  Reindeer and caribou are the same species but they look different.  The reindeer are much smaller and domesticated.  Caribou are large and elk-like.  And if anyone ever asks, all of Santa's reindeer are females! who else would do all that work during night and early morning hours and not complain?  Actually, all reindeer have antlers but the males lose them in the fall and the females lose them in the spring when they give birth. Since it's spring they've had their babies and they are in velvet.

Babies could not be fed.

They had a few elk.

  1. Incredible pictures in your last few blogs-some look like postcards! Love seeing the wildlife-seems to be a lot of moose. Also the reindeer ranch was neat-can't say I've ever been on a reindeer ranch! Do they just raise reindeer for petting-hopefully :) keep the photos coming. Safe travels.
